Working with tourism

THE GLOBAL MARKETPLACE FOR TOURISM ORGANISATIONS TO MEET, SELL AND EXHIBIT SEEMED LIKE AN UNLIKELY PLACE TO RAISE THE ISSUE OF SINGLE-USE PLASTICS IN TOURISM.

However, with support from Professor Harold Goodwin at Responsible Tourism, the World Travel Market hosted an installation created by us on that theme.

Created with a team from Anthropologie, and using their former shop window replica whales made from recycled materials, we dressed them with plastic bottle tops collected by Rame Peninsula Beach Care - part of a chain 1.3km long that they have collected.

The installation not only attracted significant social media and mainstream media coverage but engaged participants in an urgently need dialogue on the scourge of plastics on our beaches and oceans, and led to a joint workshop with WasteAid UK, Water-to-Go, Brighter PR, and Plastic Ocean Foundation.
